First Day of School

Every child deserves to start off with the same opportunities.
  Every single one.

My granddaughter started kindergarten today. Her family is not wealthy, so she did not have the most expensive shoes or a designer backpack. But her family is RICH. She started off with two parents who value their daughter, and value a good education.

Going to school and feeling successful matters.

Celebrating that first day is priceless!

My daughter and son-in-law are really good at starting family traditions. The first day of school is being celebrated like a national holiday at their house. AS IT SHOULD BE! Why not instill into their child that this is the most important day of her life?

I keep thinking about all of the kids that are starting school this week. Is their first day of school a big event? What if they have parents that are not as enthusiastic about their first day of school? What if they are hearing that school supplies cost too much or its exhausting getting ready for school to start or that they just can't get the time off to take them to school the first day?  What is that child hearing? Does it give them the impression that their education isn't important, that it is inconvenient or dependent upon financial class?

Is every single child starting off with the same opportunity?

It starts at home. At home, now!

I know there are tired parents, ill parents, single parents, step-parents, and people who step into the role of parents for those kids who don't have their own. I know what it is like to be broke and tired and frustrated and have to miss work. I also know this:  Education is a privilege. A PRIVILEGE!

Celebrate that first day of school! Today is the day that the world opens up and wraps you child in books and maps and numbers and art. Make it a holiday. Celebrate it with fervor! Throw a party!

My heart is touched with deep sadness for those kids who do not experience that sentimental excitement that occurs when they line up on that first day, when they wave goodbye to parents, and when they enter the magical world of the classroom. Maybe share some celebration with them, too.

Happy First Day of School! It matters. YOU matter!
