At the Heart of You

Oprah Winfrey said, "....what we dwell on is who we become."

Jesus said, "... where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." He also said (and I paraphrase loosely), "That deep desire in your heart? Do THAT. I will finish it. I started it, you committed it to me, and I'll finish it but you have to do the work."

Okay, okay, enough preaching. But Oprah hit the nail on the head, didn't she?

So, what is at the heart of you? What are you dwelling on?

Technology and instant gratification have altered career choices and life experiences so much in the past 20 years. It is why art is less effective, less attractive. Few make time to look, to really look at something, and few want to feel, deeply feel much of anything. The deep thinkers and gatherers of visual information are left lacking because the nature of the world has been altered so very much.

There really is very little time to dwell on much of anything. Our eyes dance from screen to screen, relaying information at lightning speed and our dwelling dwindles.

We do have a knack for dwelling on the have nots, or wish I would haves, or the hurts that disrupt us. Why does negativity run at a higher frequency than positivity does? We are so fueled by instant gratification that we run full steam ahead past the good things that we should be dwelling on.

This is what is important about art. Art initiates pause. It tells the soul to stop, to see the beauty being overlooked in this chaotic, troubled and uptight world. If given just an extra moment, it can free the spirit to feel, to experience something beyond the negative thoughts that chase us down and bind us up. It gives the heart time to just stay awhile, feel deeper, and slow down. Art, at its very soul, gives the anxious and the peaceful a moment just long enough to meet. And in that moment, the soul can relax, and find its strength, it courage, its beauty. Or maybe art will give the heart the desire to find those very things.

When The Gathering Place becomes a reality, and this unique place where art, artists, art lovers, and the people who love them can come gather, I hope it is a peaceful place where hearts and minds stop racing. I hope it is the soft place to land where you can search for what is at the heart of you. I hope it encourages you to look for the heart in you.

Opening an art gallery called The Gathering Place is what I am dwelling on. Being an artist is at the heart of me. It is what I've become.

What is at the heart of you?
